Novels about male inadequacy and the lust for death by Christine Lehmann

Translated by Cathy Milby

"But I was always wrong anyway and that gives you a degree of confidence."

ImageLisa Nerz, queer journalist and heroine of Christine Lehmann's hard-boiled novels, published by Ariadne, is the antithesis of Emma Bovary,  Béatrix and other female characters of 18th and 19th Century literature who were the subjects of the author's academic studies before she became a novelist. Christine Lehmann is versatile - she writes crime novels and romantic fiction for young people - still fiction, of course - but then she also writes feminist articles for Das Argument, as well as radio plays, a handbook for crime novelists and, recently, she has brought Lisa Nerz to the theatre. Her 2000 novel Der Bernsteinfischer (The Amber Fisherman) was filmed in 2005.

Sam Millar au FIRN de Frontignan PDF Print
Written by Corinne Naidet
Monday, 13 June 2011

The Hero is Tired

An interview by Corinne Naidet,

helped by Marie-Anne Lucas for the translation

exit music ian rankinIan Rankin's character John Rebus only has a few days left before him. He does not suffer from an incurable disease, nor is he likely to be murdered by one of his many enemies, but in Exit Music (Editions du masque, 2010), he is about to retire. Ten days before the fateful date, Rebus and his team are faced with a new investigation : a Russian poet who opposed his country's government has be found beaten to death in a car park. Is it a political crime, an act of revenge, or a villainous murder?

Still very rebellious, Rebus turns his hierarchy against him and is therefore suspended against all expectations. But they should have known that this cop was tenacious : with the help of his dear colleague Shioban Clarke, he is going to do his utmost to reveal the truth. All the more so because his personal enemy Ger Cafferty has just been attacked and is struggling between life and death.
